2002

Our Winning Form

Having identified a real need in the employment market, we founded Winning Resumes in 2002. From humble beginnings in Brisbane and on the Gold Coast, our personal marketing approach to résumé writing quickly demanded attention in the marketplace, generating invitations to address the Australian Institute of Management and Australia’s leading Careers & Employment Expos.

2003 In 2003 we provided résumé and job seeker tips for readers of the Courier Mail, Adelaide Advertiser and the Gold Coast Bulletin, while the Melbourne Age also covered the development of our young company.

Launching Winning Ways Training in 2003, Winning Resumes is currently featured live on mycareer.com.au and is represented on careerone.com.au.

Opening our first Sydney Office in late 2003, we extended our successful vocational development training and résumé services to selected Job Network members in both Sydney and on the Gold Coast. To meet demand, we also welcomed professional writer, Lauren Daniels to our small and dedicated team.

2004 Committed to job seeker support in an ever-changing careers environment, in 2004 we are excited to be a part of a new a unique 15 week television program called Kick Start Careers, to be telecast nationally on Channel 10 from Saturday 27th November at 2.30 pm.

In 2005 we look forward to continuing to grow and extending our support to members of the job network.

INTRODUCING LAUREN DANIELS TO THE TEAM

Contributing over 13 years corporate communications experience with international companies, Lauren Daniels is a professional writer and editor qualified with a BA and an MFA degree in Writing.

After working for several years as the Executive Assistant to the President of a Fortune 500 publishing company in the hi-tech industry, she changed careers and took on a position assisting unemployed and homeless people in Boston with their communication skills to help them secure their benefits, pursue training and land jobs.

Lauren migrated from the USA in 2000, worked as a copyeditor for an advertising agency and began teaching effective writing and editing workshops for various organisations. She joined the Winning Resumes team in June 2004.

THE IMPORTANCE OF A WINNING RESUME

There is no one easy formula or generic template that makes a Winning Resume. The success of a résumé lies in its uniqueness – what it says about you as an employee that makes you stand out from the crowd. With this in mind, the best way to approach your résumé is to think of it as your own personal marketing kit. Just like any other product on the shelf, competing for selection, you need to:

  • Visually catch the eye of the employer through professional layouts & design
  • Target the right market by appealing to employers values and the job criteria

While there is no magic formula or generic template, just like any advertising campaign, there are some basic key components every résumé must have.

  • Contact Details
    Your Name, Address, Phone Numbers and Email Address
  • Career Objective/Career Statement
  • Key Skill Summary [Preferred but optional]
  • Employment History or Relevant Experience
  • Professional Development
    All education, training and qualifications – when and where.
  • Key Competencies [Optional]
  • Additional Skills
    Such as Computer Skill, Languages etc.
  • Referees
    The names of 2-3 professional persons that can verify your work experience

TODAY’S RESUME SHOCKER

Bad Humour

Unless applying for a position as a clown, any humour on your résumé is inappropriate and will work against you. This was the case for the unemployed Mr Funny Bags who sent in an old shoe with his résumé, along with a note that read: 'Now that I have my foot in the door'?!!!

CHRISTMAS BREAK

A well-deserved Christmas break is almost here (We are beginning the count down early). After working all year with no breaks the Winning Resumes team will finally be taking some time off to regroup and recharge in preparation for what is looking like an exciting year in 2005.

Winning Resumes Office will be closed from Friday December 17th and will reopen Monday January 10th.
